What you get | Starting from |
Tools | Tips |
The chair legs |
Plank of poplar 5 mm thick (you can take it from a box of fruit) |
Scrollsaw - pencil - drawing compass - sandpaper (180 - 220 or more) or minidrill |
Instead of the compass you can use string + pencil Sandpaper: use it on wood block, otherwise you risk to accentuate the valleys of the piece instead of leveling it. If you want to stain the wood, do it before pasting otherwise the glue will prevent the absorption of the color |
The seat frame |
Strip of lindenwood or poplar - about 2-3 mm x 8 mm | Scrollsaw or cutter - set square 45° - glue - sandpaper | For your 45° you can use a piece of paper, fold it three times (180° - 90° - 45°) to get a precise and cheap set square. You can help bonding with clothespins (in the corners, to keep pieces together) and thread sewing (wrapped around to keep the pieces) |
The seat structure |
Legs + seat | Scrollsaw or cutter - glue - sandpaper | Make a space for legs into the seat frame; glue the legs paying attention to the height of the seat and the right angle |
The leg crosses | Strip of wood 2 x 2 mm (with cutter and ruler) or toothpicks | Cutter- glue |
Care of height and horizontality |
The bands of back | Thin poplar (1 – 1.5 mm) |
Bottle or can - string - hair dryer - cutter - sandpaper | Soak the wood sheet for 2 hours, put it on the bottle or can and wrap with string. After one day - or much less using the hair dryer - you get the curved shape |
The finished complete structure | Rough structure + wax or paint - little brush | Fine sandpaper or minidrill - cloth and wax or paint |
Smooth and paint before stuffing the chair. The back strips can be glued before or after stuffing |
Stuffing | 2.5 mt fine canvas string | Fingers and patience - a crochet or a needle if you will at the end | You can start knotting or gluing an end of the string to the frame. Care to uniform tension and order of turns. To finish you can shoot string inside the coils or put a drop of glue below. |
